Bursary Fund
Some of the doctors and nurses wishing to train in Integrative Medicine have indicated that they will struggle to pay the course fees, in addition to paying for their travel, accommodation for 25 nights and the weekday locum cover they will need to employ to take time out of their practices. For a doctor, locum cover is payable at £500 per day, and for a nurse this would be circa £200 per day bringing the total cost required to do the course to £19,720 for a doctor and £14,620 for a nurse.
Several young doctors have indicated that they still have large student loans to pay related to their time in medical school, and most nurses’ salaries will also make full payment of costs difficult.
Therefore all students who enrol with FIM are being given a pack of fund-raising ideas to help them approach their families, colleagues, local businesses, Grant Making Trusts and CAM business suppliers for financial help to attend the course. Advice and encouragement will be given to help them fundraise for themselves and they will also receive information about how to get a student loan.
In the event of a shortfall, IHT will consider applications from exceptional students, who otherwise would be unable to attend the FIM for financial reasons. Any student applying for a discretionary grant will be means-tested and it is expected that grants will range from 20-50% of course fees depending upon individual circumstances.
IHT is committed to assisting and supporting doctors and nurses in their pursuit of recognised qualifications in Integrated Medicine. In addition, where possible, it aims to offer bursary funding to patients who are seeking medical support based on IM principles. The main demand for patient bursaries is expected to be when IHT opens its Phase 2 facility. However, in line with its founding charitable objectives, IHT is already funding some requests from those in financial difficulty that are life-threatened, with help to receive IM treatment and support.
IHT aims to raise in access of £100,000 in Year 1 to create a Bursary Fund from which those identified as special cases can apply for a discretionary grant. In the following two years it will continue to top up the fund through ongoing fundraising activities. In addition, any future surpluses from FIM courses will be added to the Bursary Fund.
We welcome any contributions to the Bursary Fund. Please talk to our fund-raising team on 0845 890 9131.
