Longer life

Four healthy behaviours may
add 14 years to lifespan.

Scientists have found that adopting four healthy behaviours - regular exercise, not smoking, moderate alcohol consumption and eating five daily portions of fruit and vegetables - can add 14 years to a person’s life.

The study is part of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) and represents the first time the combined impact of these four behaviours, which have usually been investigated in isolation, has been determined.

Food for thought

Healthy diet could halt 70,000 early deaths, study suggests

Almost 70,000 premature deaths a year - more than one in 10 - could be avoided if people in the UK switched to a healthier diet, according to an analysis by the Cabinet Office.

A third of heart disease and a quarter of all cancers are thought to be diet-related. The prognosis is worst for children; they eat a diet that is proportionately even worse than that of adults, and puts them at even higher risk of disease, disability and a truncated active lifespan.

Diluting the cause

Fifth of NHS Trusts turn away from Homeopathy

Over a fifth of NHS hospital trusts have cancelled or reduced funding of homeopathy in the past two years, after a campaign by leading scientists to remove the alternative therapy from the NHS.

IHT View

IHT Logo There is urgent need for new, cheaper models of effective, sustainable healthcare. Other than in the area of cancer medicine (the now widely accepted Bristol Approach), the great potential of the IM health movement has not yet been harnessed and other effective models of IM practice must now be modeled and disseminated for the other Western lifestyle-related illnesses and for the proactive generation of public health.

Launching on Target

The Integrated Health Trust is delighted to announce its first corporate sponsor.  Chartered Accountancy firm Target is a ‘top 30’ UK practice that specialises in the needs of business owners and anyone who wants to maintain and increase wealth.

Managing Director Keith Seeley sees the firm’s support for this year’s IHT London launch as a natural part of Target’s wider community commitments: “The Integrated Health Trust represents a growing awareness of new, holistic approaches to health and wellbeing. As a firm of accountants we also take a holistic approach when advising high net worth clients, taking the time to understand personal and business goals, so there is a good synergy between us and the Trust. Target is committed to supporting the local community and we are enthusiastic about what the Integrated Health Trust will offer by way of proactive health creation.”

Target has an impressive client base of successful businesses and high net worth individuals. The practice has advised on over £550 million worth of deals in the past two years and is also well known for its tax advice and strategic expertise for those who want to maintain and increase their wealth. London calling

Following the very successful launch in November at Green Park Brasserie in Bath, the Integrated Health Trust is now organising a national launch in London on May 22.

This will be an opportunity to share our positive vision and tangible plans with key people in the capital. The event will be addressed by Professor Karol Sikora and Professor David Peters.

Please contact Jaq Chapelle if you have any suggestions for guests we can invite who you think would be interested in supporting us and could help us reach our £500,000 fundraising target.

IHT is also planning to host an Autumn Ball, more details of which will be announced in our summer newsletter, so watch this space for news of a night of fun fundraising frolics.

Endorse us!

Nick Hart-Williams, co-founder of social change network ‘Be The Change’ has endorsed the IHT mission by becoming our first ‘organisation member’. Also thanks to the Royal Crescent Hotel and Greenpark Brasserie in Bath who have pledged to make IHT their designated charity for 2008.

Making progress

Thank you to all our new members for your wonderful support and generous donations. We feel greatly heartened and are now progressing very well with our planning and research. Major progress has been made on plans for the College of Integrated Medicine, and Dr Mark Atkinson and I have already completed the syllabus for a two year Membership qualification as an in-service post-graduate training for doctors.

The next steps will be to work on the specification for our residential clinic and also to create a visual representation of the centre we plan to build. Meanwhile, we are researching the need and demand for our work and creating a business plan ready for our capital appeal.

Now with three days of my week devoted to the Trust we will be unstoppable! Please network the Trust to all your contacts so that we can quickly assemble a powerful support base for our vision.

With love and appreciation

Rosy
